Artist Statement

My recent glasswork is a twofold exploration. First, an exploration of my skills working with molten glass. Learning how it responds to gravity, heat, cooling, and how the tools interact with it. Second, an exploration of my own creativity. I am figuring out how to express myself through this particular medium. I do this through the use of color, light, and a wide array of diverse styles, techniques, and processes. The exploration resulted in numerous pieces warped, cracked, and shattered on the floor, however, these pieces are valuable to the learning process.

My favorite aspect of studio art is the process of creating using materials and learned skills. I look forward to the journey that will unfold, as opposed to the final artwork. I believe this comes from my experience in Waldorf education, in which art is included in every subject and aspect of the school day. However, just because the final artwork is secondary to the journey getting there, it is still important it conveys a message. The finished artwork should reflect the journey, question the creative process, and embody the inspirations that shaped the final artwork.

The works you see here are reflective of my four-year journey at Centre College, beginning with the orbs, Tranquil Views, and Slithering Dragon. The journey continued with the ceramic piece and glass cast dragon, and concluded with Space2 and the Twisty Cups. These cups were a skills-building exercise, and also served as both a creative outlet and a functional product.

Glass, for me, is the medium that gives the most freedom to do as I please. There are countless opportunities to experiment and explore with glass and I am never barred from adding creativity and innovation.
