With the limited supplies and space that came with quarantine, I had to take a new approach to my art. The global pandemic brought hardships to not only me, but also to those closest to me. Being stuck inside all day took a toll on my friends’ and my mental health. You begin to feel lazy and tired of what you see around you all the time. This includes your own face. It is hard to keep a positive image of yourself in such uncertain times. To highlight the beauty I see in the people around me, I chose to paint my best friends from home in the style of two classic beauty icons—Twiggy and Marilyn Monroe.

I used Twiggy and Marilyn Monroe as inspiration for two reasons. First, my friends’ natural looks are remarkably similar to their respective icons. Second, the style of each icon fits into my style, contrived from my admiration of the works of artists like Wayne Thiebaud.
