Being in quarantine and continuing school at home is weird. Living and working in the same place is weird. My bedroom has become my studio. As a result, I am my own model because I am always available.

My intent for these works is to alter my appearance so that the subject is more interesting to me. Three self-portraits would be boring after a while without altering any props or poses. In order to challenge myself, I picked poses that were active like straightening my hair or putting on lipstick. Because of my limited space and resources, the gestures that I chose were ones I would see every day and domestic by nature of the space in which they are enacted.

The theme also reflects my interest in depicting the quiet moments that I experience before I go out into the chaos of the world. These moments are often my favorite, because they are a time of self-care and self-reflection. There is no pressure to be anything other than myself before I go somewhere and inevitably encounter societal pressures revolved around my actions and my appearance.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing has felt like a long, quiet moment before I venture out into the world again. As a senior, I expected graduation to be met with exciting opportunity to go out into the chaos of post-grad life. However, ‘graduating’ during a time of social distancing is going to be anticlimactic. It will be characterized as a time of ‘getting ready’ much like these self-portraits.
