This painting was born out of an idea for a painting I planned to pursue when we were still at Centre. I was on the hunt for a couch that I could purchase for JVAC and use for a seated pose of a girl in a dress. It did not occur to me until recently that I could easily utilize that idea at home, where we have plenty of couch space, dresses, and a sister who is willing to pose for a picture.

This painting takes place in my living room at home. While Kassidy was out of town for a week, I wanted to be able to paint her. I took a photograph of her on our couch in a dress. I had ideas for poses, but after we did those she returned to a position that was comfortable for her. I said “oh, I like that pose” and she dryly replied, “this is how I sit.” That is the pose I ended up painting.

I thought it might be challenging to paint such a large scene on a small canvas. The canvas is only 14" x 11" and I wanted to paint a full figure, a couch, and a side table in that limited space. Although details like the rug pattern were difficult, it made the figure easier to paint because I was able to simplify the form. Painting Kassidy’s head has proven to be a challenge, but simplifying the face to light and dark planes while using a very limited palette, made the process much quicker.
