This self-portrait is the least playful of the works in my show. The painting began as a charcoal study of myself mainly for practice. I had not painted an objective self-portrait in oils since my sophomore year; being quarantined in my home felt like an appropriate time to return to self-portraiture.
I look at this self-portrait in comparison to those I made two years ago and am pleased with the progress I have made in my time painting at Centre. I feel like a completely different painter now from sophomore year after countless hours of thoughtful instruction from professors and loads of practice. This self-portrait allowed me to experiment with color and texture in a way that directly influenced how I approached my larger self-portrait, Hanging Spout. I found more confidence in my brushwork and decision making throughout the creation of this work. It is the beginning of more exploration and learning to come.
