This semester I developed my skills with mixed media: combining charcoal, ink, oil paint, graphite, and watercolor. The Horses and Lion are the result of my work with watercolor and ink, a combination that I became fond of. I enjoy the bold contrast of the ink against the lighter watercolor and decided to use the two for a series of animal studies. Animals became a subject of focus as they’d always held my interest and I desire to create compositions with animals and humans together. Albrecht Dürer’s works are an inspiration to this process. His figures of knights on horseback appear impressive and dignified while his depictions of demons are quite innovative, combining the features of human and beast into one. With ambitions to create works that similarly combine the figures of people and animals, I began to study animals to strengthen my understanding of their forms. I began with horses, creating multiple sketches of their anatomies before creating the final watercolor of the two horses.
