After working on Horses, I sought to work on animals that appeared rather ferocious. Lions, well-known for being apex predators, were perfect subjects. Lion manes are quite beautiful, and I believed that ink would do well to illustrate them. Mirroring my horse studies, I studied lions anatomically at first before moving onto watercolor pieces. I created two images of lions overall, discovering that the pen used for Horses was overwhelming for the more delicate fur of the lion. On the second and currently exhibited lion, I sought out a lighter pen that was more successful in applying strokes of ink that didn’t overpower the watercolor.
